We received the unexpected news that Rob passed away in his sleep on September 5, 2023, at the age of 65. He was a connector of people and an active presence in the director community in Calgary and beyond.

Rob served on the Calgary ICD Chapter Executive from 2014 to 2019, including acting as Chapter Chair in 2017-18, and as a Mentor and Advisor since 2019. He brought his keen energy and insight to help guide the chapter, including much appreciated assistance in hosting the 2016 National ICD conference in Calgary. Rob’s views were always well considered, and he presented them with conviction and clarity. His rationale and critical thought distinguished him from many and he had the courage to hold his convictions, even when they were contrary to the popular narrative. Colleagues appreciated his passion and openness.

Rob also served on ATB Financials’ board from 2014 and truly cherished the opportunity to add his deeply-experienced and well-researched perspectives. On the board for nine years Rob was instrumental in developing ATB’s audacious 2030 strategy as well as providing strategic guidance to management as the organization navigated numerous challenges and considered various growth opportunities. He contributed to ATB’s first acquisition, Grow Technologies, which provided key incremental technological capabilities better enabling the bank to assist thousands of Albertans through the COVID pandemic. Through all of this, he ensured the bank remained true to its’ core mission “Powering Possibility” and the industries that have been foundational to the province that he loved.

We share his loss with his wife Carolyn, children Madeline, Robert, and Gabrielle, and his extended family and network of friends and colleagues. Rob was a stellar member of the community and his resolute and studied contributions will be dearly missed by all of us who knew him.
